Hodes

We were young and we shared things –
having a boy friend, her boy friend was so cute,
and having key privileges so we could stay out late
and singing –
my singing blues songs
and the pair of us singing our way through
Ruddigore, Gilbert and Sullivan all night if you let us.

And all the years of phone calls, talking of family,
problems of health, of parents aging,
joys of having a child, pain of the child’s pain,
the greater joy of watching the child grow and
be loving and be loved and our own aging and
changing and all the time

her great great joy in life and the joy we all had
from knowing her and loving her and now
our sorrow at her going ahead of us to where we
will all go.
