Cousins Island
Ferry 207-846-3700
This is the ferry we use and recommend. To use it you park in a lot off of Rt 1 and take a bus to the ferry dock. You then ride on a small ferry over to Chebeague where we would pick you up.
Click here to go to the Chebeague Transportation Website for ferry times. There are 3 times listed; the time the bus leaves the parking lot (this is the time you need to watch); the time the ferry leaves the dock on Cousins (this is not very important since you have to be on the bus); and the time the ferry leaves Chebeague (this is the time to use for leaving the island).
Directions: to the parking lot in Cumberland for the Cousins Island Ferry:
From Boston:
Route 95 North.
In Maine, Route 95 is the Turnpike.
Take Exit 44 off the Maine Turnpike onto Route 295. You will pass through Portland.
Take Exit 15 off of Route 295 for Route 1
Turn Left onto Rt 1, go about 1/4 of a mile
Turn Right into bus parking lot
10-15 minutes before the times listed above for the parking lot (in summer it’s
crowded & you need more time to find a space, etc.)
It is good to be at the parking lot 10 to 15 minutes BEFORE the time the bus leaves to have time to unload your car, get a parking ticket and park.
Parking: You will be given a ticket for the parking lot. The parking fee is 15$ / day. When you are on the ferry you will pay for ferry tickets (you can buy a round trip ticket for a slight discount).

Directions: From Boston & points south use Route 95 North (either from downtown Boston or from Route 128 north). In Maine Route 95 becomes the Maine Turnpike. Take Exit ?? off the Maine Turnpike onto Route 295. Take Exit ?? off Route 295 onto “Franklin Street”. Go across town on Franklin St. to end of street. At the traffic light where Franklin St. ends at Commercial Street you are facing Casco Bay Lines. You can drive into the Casco Bay Lines terminal and let people off just after the parking garage.
The ferry will stop at several islands before Chebeague. It will let you off at Chandlers Cove. You can either call to be picked up or walk
(15 min.) across the island to our house.
The drive is aprox 2 1/2 hours from Boston but I would recommend
allowing 3 hours to make the drive for the first time.
Parking: You can park in the ferry parking
garage for $12/day. Some $5 lots are
located on Commercial St. For street parking (free), carefully check which days you can park at each spot by looking at the
signs posted along the road. Typically
you can not park on the street over a specific night such as Monday or Tuesday
night. The night varies by which street you are on.
How the ferry
works: (tickets, luggage, bikes, dogs...) You must purchase tickets at the
counter for people, dogs, and bicycles.
If you have a family group it may be worth getting a “book” of
tickets. Also seniors get a
discount. You can bring as much luggage
on for free as you can carry. If you
have more luggage than that or you wish to walk on to the ferry with less
luggage in your arms you can ship bags as “freight”. To ship luggage as freight you must go around to the freight
window (to the left of the ticket counter down a corridor) and tell them how
many bags or items you are shipping. You pay by the item so it is good to
consolidate your items in a few bags.
The freight desk will tell you where to put your freight. You should
arrange for freight aprox. 30 minutes
before the ferry departure time to give them time to load the freight. The return ride from Chebeague does not
require a ticket. If you have freight
let the ferrymen know and you will pay for the freight when you get back to the
mainland.
